Let’s begin with the Why…
We’re told to stamp out negativity, avoid toxicity and live an ideal. The truth is, we need to find the calm within the chaos, not escape reality. Those moments of bliss are few and far between, so we’re here to support each one of them. Our essential oil blends can be composed into your routine with simplicity, each with its various pairings. Allow your decompression sessions to be enhanced with the aroma of our plant-based candles or through classic essential oil methods.
Safety First. Relaxation Later.
When dispensing essential oils into the environment, consider pregnant or breastfeeding women, children, or pets as some essential oils can be dangerous.
So, how are essential oils generally used?
If you’re new to this societal shift in wellbeing and rejuvenation – we hear you. A little goes a long way. In every bottle of our oil blends, you can apply them topically by dilution (always with care and after performing a patch test and never apply undiluted), add into a diffuser, burner, your bath, or simply inhale.
Our candles are also perfectly matched with our seven signature blends. Enjoy up to 30 hours of burn time with the added benefits of essential oil.
How To Use Essential Oils – Six Ways:
1: Diffuser:
A diffuser is a device that is used to evaporate or disperse the oil into the air. We recommend checking the manufacturer’s instructions for whichever device you use, as it varies between each device. Always err on the side of caution!
Some examples of essential oil diffusers are ceramic, electric, candle, reed diffusers and ultrasonic.
2: Direct Inhalation:
The simplest way to use essential oils. Just open the bottle, keep away from your face (around 30cm) and inhale a few times deeply. Be careful not to let the undiluted oil touch your skin.
3: Inhale With Steam:
You’ll just need a bowl of hot water and a decent size towel. Place the bowl on the table and add a few drops of our essential oil blends. With your head over the bowl, place the towel over your head so that the steam is trapped inside.
Close your eyes and inhale the steam for a few minutes – however long you need – or until there is no more steam. You can repeat this throughout the day.
4: Evaporation:
Cotton balls work great for this! But you can use other absorbent materials and fabrics too. Just add a few drops of the essential oil to the material and allow the scents to disperse naturally into the room.
Top tip: Add a few drops onto your (used up) car air freshener. It’s the easiest way to recycle trees!!!
5: Using directly on your skin:
The Calm Society essential oil blends can be applied topically to the skin but need to be diluted in a carrier oil. Instructions are as follows:
- Get a therapeutic grade carrier oil, such as coconut oil, jojoba, almond, olive or argan oil. All have different properties, so research to find the right one for your needs.
- Face: Dilute to at least 1%
- Body: Dilute to at least 2%
- Bath & Rinse off: Dilute to at least 3%
Once you have created your mixture, it can be applied to your skin, concentrating on areas of tension and pain. Massage into your feet, put a small amount under your nose, and apply to pressure points around your body, such as your temples and wrists.
You can fill a rollerball bottle with your mixture so that you always have your favourite essential oil to hand.
Our oils can be added to various cosmetic products such as lotions, creams, balms and face masks but should always be diluted first in a carrier oil as above.
6: Using in the bath:
Use your diluted essential oils directly in your bath water (Steps above); alternatively, add your bubble bath, conditioner, shampoo, body wash, or salts. To inhale essential oils as you shower, add a few drops to the wall or your flannel.

I’m new to essential oils, are there any safety precautions I need to take?
Essential oils need to be used with care, especially if it’s your first time. It’s important to do a reaction test if you plan on applying topically. Our essential oils are also for external use only, do not ingest or add to food and drink. You’ll need to use a carrier oil to dilute our oils before topical application.
Precautions when using essential oils
- Essential oils should not be used by older adults, children younger than 12 and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- The potency and potential risks of essential oils require that you use them with care when undiluted. Never ingest or use internally.
- Some essential oils can be dangerous for pets. Make sure you consider other people or animals before you release essential oils into the environment.
- If you have any existing health conditions or concerns, always consult a doctor before using essential oils.
- If you would like a plan or more information from a professional, you can find an aromatherapist. Please see National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy online.
